A man wanted for hitting his wife with a car nearly 18 months ago has been arrested.
Jermaine L. Priester, 34, of 102 Berry St., Barnwell, has been wanted on charges of attempted murder and malicious injury to personal property since pinning his wife's leg between two cars as he drove away from their house in a "reckless manner," according to a Barnwell Police Department report concerning the May 5, 2012, incident.
The report states this happened after Priester came home "tore up" from a night of drinking and two men came up the driveway wanting to fight him. Priester went inside his house to get a knife, but the men were gone when he came back out.
He then proceeded to get in his car and "rammed" into the front of his sister-in-law's car, which had just pulled up. Priester "pushed it (the other car) backwards in the driveway until he could drive around it," states the report.
At the same time, the report states Priester's wife was standing between the two cars holding her baby when her leg became stuck between them. Priester then backed up and spun out the yard and into a tree, striking it several times, states the report.
A deputy spotted Priester on Hwy. 278 going toward Allendale, but he refused to stop. He evaded arrest until Oct. 8 when police were dispatched to the SRP Credit Union's ATM in Barnwell for an activated alarm.
A second BPD report states a responding officer found a man, later identified as Priester, near the ATM. He ran toward Apple Street when the officer pulled in the parking lot.
Priester was arrested by another officer following a foot chase. A hammer was located in Priester's possession along with SRP ATM receipts.
Officers found damage to the ATM, including a panel under the night deposit machine that was removed. The metal entrance door of the ATM building "appeared to have (been) beaten with an unknown object," states the report.
Priester was released to the Barnwell County Detention Center and charged with safe cracking, possession of burglary tools and malicious injury to real property, in addition to the charges from the 2012 incident.
Editor's Note: Parts of the reports spell Priester's first name "Jamaine."
