The Barnwell County Career Center board began their Oct. 21 meeting by hiring a new school resource officer.
The board unanimously approved hiring Deputy Greg Gantt, a school resource officer in Barnwell District 45. He replaces Joe Handberry, who left in September for another job, said BCCC Director Sam McKay.
McKay said Gantt was recommended by Barnwell County Sheriff Ed Carroll after asking his deputies who was interested in the job.
Gantt's expenses - salary, benefits and equipment - are approximately $3,800 more than they were for Handberry. SRO expenses are split with the school paying 75 percent and the sheriff's office paying the rest, McKay said.
Despite a higher cost, McKay said it's important to have an SRO because they give an extra set of eyes. "We want everybody to feel safe," he said, though "we certainly hope nothing ever does happen."
The board also approved a list of budget amendments. They total $147,586.73 less in revenue than the original budget passed earlier this year, according to documents provided by the school.
The largest amendment comes from ad valorem taxes. The school originally budgeted $1,256,772 in tax revenue for what they needed to balance the budget; but now project taxes will bring in $1,110,388.27, said McKay. That's a difference of $146,383.73.
To make up the difference for all amendments, the board approved using $147,586.73 from their fund balance. This leaves them with $360,091.34 in their reserves, which is approximately twice as much as the 12 percent their policy requires them to have on hand, according to documents.
In other news:
Progress is being made on the school's process to become accredited by AdvancEd, said McKay. An accreditation team is scheduled to visit March 2-4, 2014.
Williston-Elko High School freshmen will tour Oct. 31 to learn about courses they may be interested in taking in the future. Blackville-Hilda and Barnwell High schools will schedule tours soon. "We want them to see what we have," said McKay.
The next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the board room.
