The Barnwell High varsity football team suffered a heartbreaking 14-10 loss to Bamberg-Ehrhardt High Friday night in Bamberg.
Barnwell had control of the game, but missed scoring opportunities in the redzone, allowing Bamberg-Ehrhardt to rally for a late touchdown to pull out the game.
With the loss, Barnwell High drops to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in region play.
For the second week in a row (four takeaways last week against Calhoun County), the Warhorses' defense played a superbly.
A unit fueled by Reagan Guest, Marcus Spann, Charles Williams and Trever Sumpter held the Red Raiders to one touchdown through three and a half quarters.
Sumpter's 73-yard interception return, coupled with a 35-yard field goal by Nathan Toole had the Warhorses ahead 10-7 at halftime.
For Barnwell High, it looked like the lead would hold up.
The momentum of the game, however, changed in a matter of plays midway in the fourth quarter.
First, the Warhorses failed to convert on a third down and one. Then Barnwell's special team unit allowed the Red Raiders to return the ensuing punt deep into their territory.
The Red Raiders went on to score the go-ahead touchdown as Summer Cooler and K.C. Crosby teamed up on a 16-yard scoring strike.
Trailing 14-10, a Warhorse offense which struggled to find consistency, proceeded to put together its best drive of the game with 4:14 left.
After a first down run by Alex Donaldson, quarterback William Barnes threaded a pass to along the left sideline to a wide open Jamari Dunbar for a 28-yard pick up.
Moments later, after another first down run by Donaldson, the Warhorses were knocking on the endzone's door with first and goal at the Red Raiders' eight-yard line.
The excitement, however, quickly ended for the Warhorses two plays later with a fumble at the 11-yard line with 1:57 remaining in the game.
From there, the Red Raiders took over possession and ran out the remaining of the clock.
