On Oct. 15 in little league football action, the Williston small frys (9-to-10 year-olds) got the best of Barnwell by a score of 24-14 at Lemon Park.
Williston which led 8-6 at halftime, erupted for 16 unanswered points in the second half for a commanding 24-6 lead with 4:29 left to play.
Williston coach Ernest Parker said the team played really well.
"Offensively, the offensive line blocked well and the backs ran hard. On defense, we didn't allow a lot of big plays. We pretty much kept everything in front of us."
The game started with Williston on offense. Behind a heavy dose of running from Adrian Chandler and Junari Williams, Williston traveled 67 yards for a score. Chandler capped the eight-play drive with a five-yard run. Williams ran for the two-point conversion.
Down 8-0 early in the second quarter, Barnwell got some of the momentum back. On third down and one, quarterback Weston Sandifer fired a pass to Clay Pender, who broke away from a would-be tackler to score on a 38-yard pass play. After the missed two-pointer, Barnwell trailed 8-6 with 5:14 left in the first half.
Williston tried to answer on the following drive. On first down runs by Chandler and Johnny Dunbar, Williston drove across midfield to Barnwell's 26-yard line.
The drive quickly stalled as a Barnwell defensive unit, fueled by Garrison Owens, Britten Sturkie, Marcus Robinson and C.J. Gunnells, held Williston to three yards on the next four plays.
In the third quarter, Williston's offense got another crack at the end zone. This time, Williston found pay dirt as Chandler raced 22 yards for a touchdown.
De'shon Singleton highlighted the drive with a 15-yard run on third and four. Johnny Dunbar ran for the two-point conversion.
Trailing 16-6 late in the third quarter, Barnwell tried to get back into the game. Williston defense, however, played tough. A unit led by Chandler, Johnny Dunbar and Jeb Lott forced a turnover to end the drive. Chandler also had an interception on another drive.
Midway in the fourth quarter, Williston added another score on a three-yard run by John Dunbar.
Down 24-6, Barnwell found the end zone on the ensuing possession. Travorus Miller, who made several nice runs earlier in the game, scored on a 44-yard touchdown run. Pender ran for the two-point conversion to complete the scoring.
In the night capper, Barnwell got payback. The Barnwell Pee Wee team unleashed its full arsenal of offensive weapons on Williston in a 44-0 blowout win.
The game was never in doubt as Barnwell galloped to a 22-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
With the victory, Barnwell improves to 8-0 in the standings.
"This team has been playing well all season long. Offensively, we came out focused and made the most of our opportunities. Defensively, we controlled the line-of-scrimmage and didn't allow them to get into any rhythm."
Barnwell's trend of scoring early and often continued in this game.
Dallyon Creech opened Barnwell's very first drive with a 28-yard run. One play later, quarterback Craig Pender tossed a 44-yard touchdown pass to Ena Bynum. Pender passed to Bynum for the two-point conversion.
Williston tried to come back on the next drive, but the attempt ended in disaster. Titus Creech of Barnwell intercepted a pass and returned it 18 yards to the Williston 40-yard line.
On play later, Qua McKnight of Barnwell took a toss sweep and raced untouched to the end zone.
The Barnwell big-play offense continued late in the first quarter. On a play action pass, Pender hooked up with Dallyon Creech on a 65-yard scoring strike. Pender ran for the two points.
Ahead 22-0, Barnwell's offense did not cool down in the second quarter. Bynum scored on a 74-yard run. On Barnwell's next possession, Pender completed a 61-yard touchdown pass to Bynum for a 36-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Barnwell added another touchdown to complete the scoring.
For Barnwell defensively, Isaiah Williams, Taylor Roberts, Harrison Walsh, Adam Clark, William Outing and Nathan Miller all played well.
