A bicyclist was struck by a car as he rode down the wrong lane.
Melvin Jenkins, 61, of Barnwell, was riding his bicycle east on Allen Street shortly before 6 p.m. Dec. 6 when he turned in front of a 2007 Toyota. The vehicle, driven by 89-year-old Joseph Freddie Gunnells Jr. of Olar, was unable to stop before hitting Jenkins, according to a traffic collision report provided by the Barnwell Police Department.
Jenkins was transported to the hospital for multi-trauma shock, according to EMS transmissions.
The bike did not have lights or reflectors. Jenkins was also wearing dark clothing and appeared to be intoxicated, states the report.
Jenkins was found to have contributed to the accident, while Gunnells did not. No charges have been filed as of press time.
