Shirley Bolen Porter, 78, of Williston, passed away at home Monday, Dec. 16, 2013.
She was born May 28, 1935, and was the daughter of the late Byron Leon and Clydie Grubbs Bolen.
Mrs. Porter is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Gene M. Porter; daughters, Jennifer P. Edwards of Columbia, and Deborah P. (Dru) Kennedy of Columbia; son, Gerry M. (Jamie) Porter of Charleston; grandchildren, Julie Edwards, Samantha Edwards, Kevin Kennedy, and Claire Kennedy; beloved sister, Betty B. Porter (John Allen) of Williston; extended family and friends; and her devoted four-legged companion, Rooster.
She is preceded in death by a brother, Major James Leon Bolen; and a son-in-law, Sam John Edwards Jr.
Mrs. Porter was a member of First Baptist Church of Williston and the American Legion Auxiliary. She attended Furman University and the University of South Carolina. Her family knew her to be the most gracious, loving, and kindhearted mother, grandmother, and sister. She loved spending time with her family at Edisto Beach. She was a talented pianist and her final performance was a beautiful rendition of her favorite hymn, "How Great Thou Art." She will be sorely missed, but will stay forever in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Dec. 29, at the Gail Reyes Senior Center in Barnwell. Special thanks go to her physician, Dr. Asif Hashmi; and to the staff at Trinity Hospice of Aiken for their excellent care and assistance.
Memorials may be made to the Williston Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 367, Williston, S.C. 29853.
Folk Funeral Home Inc. and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
