The Barnwell High Lady Warhorses battled down to the wire, but fell short to region rival Wade Hampton High by a score of 43-40 Friday night in Barnwell.
In back and forth affair with 14 lead changes, Barnwell High surged ahead 40-39 on a putback by Ashley Williamson with 3:32 left to play.
From that point, the Lady Warhorses' offense went cold as the team missed nine straight shots to end the game.
Barnwell High coach Adrian Bell said the team had its chances.
"I was very pleased with the effort, but we have to find a way to finish games," Bell said. "We had a good opportunity to come away with a victory tonight, but we weren't able to hit crucial shots down the stretch."
The game's physicality and defensiveness resulted in 37 turnovers between the teams-Barnwell High with 17 and Wade Hampton with 20.
For Barnwell High, Ashley Williamson highlighted the defense with 12 rebounds, two blocked shots and six steals.
"For the most part, we were able to match up with them on the boards. We did a good job of pressuring the ball and contesting shots in the paint," Bell said.
At the start of the game, efficient shooting beyond the arc carried the Lady Warhorses. Senior guard Jeneka Williams highlighted the offense as she connected on three 3-point shots to give the team a 11-8 advantage.
In the second quarter, the momentum quickly swung in favor of the Lady Red Devils. Penny Griffin's 10 point effort ignited a 19-11 run that gave Wade Hampton ahead at 27-23 at the break.
"We got a little sloppy with our transition defense in the second quarter. We allowed them to have too many layups," Bell said.
Trailing 35-30 early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Warhorses stampeded back.
Fueled by baskets from Jeneka Williams, Alexis Avila, Williamson and Sharita Wright, the Warhorses went on a 8-3 run for a 38-37 lead with 4:19 left to play.
Despite Barnwell's scoring run, Wade Hampton was able to regain control of the game with 3:29 left to play.
For the Lady Red Devils, Penny Griffin, Jessica Sattlewhite and Adrienne Gantt combined to hit six free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.
In the game, Barnwell High was led by Ashley Williamson with 13 points, followed by Jeneka Williams with 12 points and Sharita Wright with six points.
