James Edward Gibson, 87, of Denmark died on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014.
He was born in Denmark on June 15, 1926, to Lonnie D and Estelle Zorn Gibson. He retired as a postmaster with the United States Postal Service and also with Brooker Hardware. He was a veteran in the United States Navy serving in the Pacific during WWII aboard the USS Gage.
Mr. Gibson was a member of the Denmark First Baptist Church for over 50 years. He lived the last few years of his life at The Oaks in Orangeburg where he made numerous friends and was active in many activities. The family would like to thank all the caregivers who loved him and made his last years such happy ones.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Denmark First Baptist Church video equipment account or to Grove Park Hospice in Orangeburg.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Jan. 16, at Denmark First Baptist Church with burial following in the Denmark Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m., Jan. 15, at Denmark First Baptist Church. The family is at the home of Elaine and Eddie Platts in Denmark.
He is survived by his daughter, Elaine G Platts and son-in-law, Edwin (Eddie) Platts of Denmark; two grandsons, William (Tammy) Platts of Cary, N.C., and Timothy (Mary) Platts of Charleston; one granddaughter, Tara P. (Daniel) Bailey of Blythewood; and four great-granddaughters, Abby, Allison, and Natalie Platts, and Kiley Bailey; one great-grandson, George Daniel (Trey) Bailey III; one sister, Janie Bell of Williston; one brother, Lonnie Gibson Jr. of Denmark; a special sister-in-law, Elizabeth M Gibson of Blackville; a special friend, Demaris Bessinger of Bamberg; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna F Gibson in 1984; two sisters, Louise G Avant, Elizabeth G Buchanan; and one brother, Phillip Gibson.
Mercer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
