The Barnwell area YMCA is one step closer to becoming a reality.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, a delegation from Barnwell led by Barnwell County Councilmen Jerry Creech, Freddie Houston and Lowell Jowers met with the executive committee for the Family Y group to hear their decision on lending their support to a Barnwell area Y.
SouthernCarolina President and CEO Danny Black said Creech, Houston and Jowers made a presentation to the committee formally asking for the Family Y's support.
The Family Y's executive committee did agree to lend their support and presented Creech a letter of support with stipulations for the next phase of the planning.
The Family Y of the Greater Augusta area currently has nine locations, according to their website. They currently offer children's and adult's sport programs as well as child care and adapted programs.
The Barnwell committee will have 30 days to finalize and present a formal three-year-plan back to the executive committee which will include financial, staffing, programs and location information.
A volunteer board of directors will also have to be chosen and seated before the next meeting.
If those plans are approved by the executive committee, the Barnwell area Y will become a satellite of the Family Y and will have the support of the Family Y.
