A Blackville church was damaged just hours before Sunday worshippers arrived when a car crashed into the front steps.
Richard Allen Williams, 26, of Williston, crashed his 1999 Ford Crown Victoria into the Blackville United Methodist Church around 4:45 a.m. Sunday morning, March 9, said Blackville Police Chief John Holston. The church is located at the corner of S. Boundary Street and Hwy. 304.
The wreck occurred as Williams' vehicle "left the roadway, went up a curb, and struck the church," said Holston, adding how speed was a factor. The church's brick front steps and outside signs were damaged as a result.
After the wreck, Williams got out of his car and walked away. Officers found him approximately 30 yards from the wreck scene, Holston said.
Williams was transported to an Augusta, Ga., hospital. Once he is released, he'll face several charges, including driving under suspension, operating an uninsured vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, and driving too fast for conditions, said Holston.
