Usually a team doesn't go into a region opener with a chip on its shoulder, but the results from the March 11 softball battle between Barnwell High and Wade Hampton High suggest otherwise.
The Lady Warhorses resembled a team on a mission as they easily disposed of the Lady Red Devils by a lopsided score of 21-0.
Barnwell High coach Carol Massengale said the team played well in all phases of the game.
"We played a good clean softball game tonight," Massengale said. "Offensively, we swung the bat well and defensively, we made some good plays."
At the plate, the Lady Warhorses wreaked havoc on the Lady Red Devils' pitching as they totalled 18 hits, including four doubles.
The offense started early for Lady Warhorses with five runs in their first at-bat.
For BHS, Kelci Brown, Laken Pritchard, DeBruhl, Kyra Shuler and Kaylie Pridgen scored in the inning. Taylor Ward highlighted the inning with a two-run RBI single.
Leading 5-0, the onslaught continued in the second inning as the Lady Warhorses pushed 10 more runs across home plate for a 15-0 advantage.
Victoria Schatzer led the way with two singles and two runs scored in the inning.
Also scoring for the team were Gillie Smith, Kia Miner, Brown, DeBruhl, Shuler, Pridgen Ward and Pritchard.
The scoring barrage would continue one inning later as the lead ballooned to 19-0 on runs by Brown, Schatzer, Minor and Ward. DeBruhl fueled the inning with a two-run RBI double.
For the game, Gillie Smith and Victoria Schatzer led the bats with three hits and two RBIs each. Pritchard went two for three with two doubles.
On the mound, DeBruhl recorded her third win (tournament included) of the season.
She threw four innings with one hit allowed and eight strikeouts.
