Barnwell District 45 is looking to improve student achievement with the addition of two curriculum specialists.
The school board approved the new positions during their April 1 work/planning session.
The curriculum specialists will "support the teachers and help them be all they can be," said Superintendent Jay Grissom. They will do this by working with Crissie Stephens, the district's curriculum director, to provide training to teachers, including spending time in the classroom and giving feedback.
Grissom said he is excited about the new positions because it goes along with their number one focus - the students. "We want to do all we can to improve both teaching and learning," he said. "That's why we're in business."
No one has been hired yet, but Grissom said they will start the process soon to advertise and fill the positions for the 2014-15 school year. To pay for two new positions, Grissom said they will look to see what can be moved around.
One change that Grissom said will save money and better serve students is moving a math teacher's position from Barnwell High School to the alternative school. Grissom said the district determined based on preliminary student enrollment data that they would not need the position at the high school, which is currently held by a teacher who is retiring. Moving the position, which will need to be filled, to the alternative school will eliminate the extra pay they are currently giving other teachers to teach math during their planning periods.
District 45 may look at other positions that can be moved around to "ensure we have help where we need help the most," Grissom said.
In addition to approving the new positions, the board spent most of the daylong session discussing goals for the district. Principals from all four schools made presentations about their respective school's strategic plan. Stephens also presented the district's plan, which Grissom said is basically a "culmination" of the schools' plans.
