The Barnwell High Warhorse baseball team went through a rough stretch lately with losses to Wade Hampton High and A.C. Flora High.
However, a season sweep over Edisto High at John Hall Field April 4 has the Warhorses riding high in the saddle again.
After defeating the Cougars 12-2 in the teams' first meeting, the Warhorses followed suit in the rematch as they delivered a similar performance in a 12-3 victory.
Barnwell High coach Don Mims said the team needed a bounce back effort.
"We had a few bad breaks over the last couple of weeks, so wins definitely come handy," Mims said. "I felt like we made a lot of progress in the game. We have a few big games coming up after spring break. Hopefully, we can continue to play well."
In the contest, the Cougars claimed a temporary lead by manufacturing a run off two hits and an error in the first inning.
After two scoreless innings, the Warhorses exploded for six runs in the third inning. In the inning, the Warhorses took advantage of a few free passes with Parker Pritchard, Justin Ridgeway, James Plexico and Nathaniel Toole all scoring after drawing walks. Dylan Brant and Ricky Hartzog each singled and scored in the inning. Rylan Still had a RBI single.
Leading 6-3, the Warhorses added to their lead in the fourth inning. Hartzog's RBI double to deep center helped fuel the three-run inning as the Warhorses increased their advantage to 9-3.
Others scoring in the inning included Pritchard and Still.
One inning later, the Warhorses put a stamp on the victory when Pritchard, Hartzog and Still all plated runs to close out the scoring.
On the mound, Warhorses senior Hartzog displayed his best stuff after avoiding a troublesome first inning. After allowing two hits in the opening inning, Hartzog subdued the Cougars' hitters the rest of the way, allowing just three hits, one earned run and six strikeouts.
