WEHS tunes up for tennis playoff

On Thursday, April 24 the Williston-Elko High tennis team rolled into its final tune-up before the start of the playoffs with an impressive win over class 3A division opponent Midland Valley High.
With the win, Williston-Elko High improves to 9-5 on the season.
Williston-Elko High coach Bernard Walters said the team has the right mind-set going into the post season.
"As a team we're playing with a lot of confidence and that's very important going into the playoffs," Walters said.
"We had a pretty solid performance today. We came out and got some good shots in. We were also consistent with our serving."
The Blue Devils sizzled out to an early advantage at the top spot. Daniel Smith of W-E made quick work of Logan Wheat of the Mustangs with scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
At No. 2 singles, Jacob Vargo of W-E battled hard, but came up short in a 5-7, 2-6 defeat to Nick Hightower of the Mustangs.
Tied at one match apiece, the Blue Devils quickly regained the momentum thanks to No. 3 player Kurt Oddermat.
Oddermat, who has won four of his last five matches, continued his impressive run with a 6-2, 6-0 straight set victory over Rhyeem McKie of the Mustangs.
Blue Devils William Robinson took care of business at the No. 4 spot by dominating Nick Morris of the Mustangs with scores of 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 5 singles, Austin Green of W-E fell in a hard-fought match to Evan Morris of the Mustangs. After dropping the opening set to Morris 6-4, Green responded with a 6-1 win in set two to even things up. Green, however, was unable to maintain the momentum in the tiebreaker with a 10-2 defeat.
In No. 1 doubles action, Smith and Vargo teamed up for a 8-6 win over Wheat and Hightower.
On March 23 at Whale Branch, the Blue Devils continued their winning ways with a 6-0 victory over Whale Branch High.
The Blue Devils dominated singles play with Daniel Smith, Jacob Vargo, Kurt Oddermat, William Robinson and Austin Green all scoring straight sets wins.
