BHS softball snags playoff victories

The Barnwell High Lady Warhorses delivered riveting performances in the opening round of the class AA district 6 softball playoffs last week.
The Lady Warhorses were in top gear against Academic Magnet High and Bamberg-Ehrhardt High as they exploded for 27 hits and 30 runs in blowout wins.
With the victories, Barnwell High advances to the final round of the district playoffs.
Barnwell High coach Carol Massengale said she was pleased with he team's play.
"I thought we played two really good games," Massengale said. "In both games, we did a good job of hitting the ball in the gaps, running and taking extra bases. We had very good hitting all through the lineup. Hopefully we can keep it going as we move on in the playoffs."
On Thursday in the playoff opener the Lady Warhorses routed Academic Magnet High by a score of 15-0.
The Lady Warhorses took control in their first at-bat, plating four runs off four hits. Senior outfielder Victoria Schatzer highlighted the inning with a RBI double.
Also scoring in the inning were Kelci Brown, Kyra Shuler and Laken Pritchard.
Ahead 6-0 in the third inning, the Lady Warhorses went back to work with their bats.
For the team seven consecutive batters plated runs as Miner, Alexis Avila, Kaylie Pridgen, Brown, Shuler, Schatzer and Debruhl scored for a 13-0 advantage. Laken Pritchard was credited with a RBI in the inning.
In the fourth inning, the Lady Warhorses put the final touches on when Schatzer and Debruhl singled and scored to close out the game.
In the pitching circle, the Lady Warhorses received a spot-on performance from both Debruhl and Brown as they combined to throw a no-hitter.
Debruhl started the game and went three innings with five strikeouts. Brown came on in relief and pitched four innings with three strikeouts to complete the game.
For the game, Taylor Ward had one of her best hitting games, going two for three with three RBIs. A group with two hits included Schatzer, Shuler, Brown, Debruhl and Miner.
On Saturday in the second round of the playoffs, the Lady Warhorses shot out on the Lady Red Raiders like a shell out of a cannon.
The Lady Warhorses brought out the heavy artillery in the first inning. For the team, Debruhl, Shuler and Schatzer all rocketed RBI doubles in an eight-run inning.
Several others who had hits and scored in the inning were Brown, Rachael Creech, Kaylie Pridgen, Ward and Miner.
Leading 8-2 in the second inning, the Lady Warhorses continued to bombard the Lady Red Raiders with runs.
This time, the Lady Warhorses scored seven runs with Miner, Shuler, Schatzer, Debruhl, Creech, Pritchard, Ward and Pridgen crossing home plate for a 15-2 advantage.
For the game, Debruhl was outstanding for the Lady Warhorses. Debruhl not only had a solid game at the plate with a three-hit 4 RBI performance, she also shut down Bamberg-Ehrhardt with a four-hit seven strikeout performance.
