The South Carolina Regional Housing Authority is teaming with police departments from around the area to sponsor a National Night Out event August 5 at Veteran's Park in Barnwell from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Law enforcement will have informative flyers to pass out on how to utilize the "Give Neighborhood Crime and Drugs a Going Away Party"
"It is to stop our crime within the communities," said Peggy Gadson-Kirkland, the Resident Initiative Coordinator for South Carolina Regional Housing Authority 3. "This is the first one we have done in Barnwell County."
"Last year we did one in our complex in Orangeburg," said Kirkland. "So far we have gotten volunteers from parks and recreation and Blackville community and it is going pretty good."
Volunteers are still being accepted to help with the event.
"We ask that the neighborhood display support by burning their front and back porch lights at night," said Kirkland. "We are trying to stress a neighborhood partnership with law enforcement,"
"We are sending a message to the criminals that we are sending a crime on vacation," said Kirkland. "I urge the residents to support this event by burning the lights and coming out to help stop crime in the community."
