Hawks take new flight after graduation
Though June 5 marked the end of the high school journey for the 45 graduates at Blackville-Hilda High School, their flight to success is just beginning.
“These are the future leaders of the world,” said Principal Dr. Sterling Harris. “You are confident, strong, but most of all you are educated.”
Though they are headed in different directions, the graduates were challenged to strive for excellence – the district’s motto – and be role models for their younger peers.
“We finally made it, but this is only the beginning,” said Salutatorian Channell Newton, who thanked everyone who supported her.
She said she doesn’t measure her high school career in periods, semesters or years, but rather in friendships. Newton encouraged her classmates to remember each other as they go their separate ways.
“We’ve had our ups and down as a class, but we came together,” said Valedictorian Jalesa Heyward. She acknowledged they will still have challenges down the road, but “we have to face them head on.”
She challenged her classmates to do all they can to create a “lifetime of success” so they can return home one day and be a shining example for future generations. This includes remembering what it means to be a Blackville-Hilda Hawk. She recited the district’s mission statement: “Blackville-Hilda Public Schools is a district where high expectations lead to academic achievement in an atmosphere where failure is not an option, knowledge leads to excellence and success prevails.”
“Know where you’re going, but don’t forget where you came from,” said Heyward, who also thanked her family, teachers and God. She also thanked their former principal, the late David Norman, who helped her improve her attitude and grades during her first three years of high school.
As she conferred the diplomas, Superintendent Dr. Teresa Pope said, “Begin your journey and find your place in life.”
Blackville-Hilda High School’s Class of 2015 earned $559,000 in scholarships and grants.
