Polling place changing for Barnwell residents
Voters in the City of Barnwell will have a new polling place to report to next year.
The National Guard Armory on Marlboro Avenue in Barnwell has been the site voters in Barnwell Precincts 1-4 have voted at for decades. However, voters for those precincts will now go to the Barnwell Health Department/DHEC facility (11015 Ellenton Street/Hwy. 278) in the Airport Industrial Park.
“We are moving one polling place only, but it affects four precincts. This is only a polling location change. No districts have been changed and no other changes have been made to any other precincts in Barnwell County,” said Naomi DeFrenn, director of the Barnwell County Voter Registration and Elections Office.
The change came at the direction of the National Guard, which has directed several other counties to stop utilizing armory facilities as polling places. One reason for the change in Barnwell is the discovery of lead in the armory and changing guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency.
DeFrenn said they were only allowed to use two rooms during the last election, instead of the big room they previously used. Now they are unable to use the building at all.
Several locations were considered before selecting DHEC. Though it is a big deal to move places, DeFrenn believes the new location will be better for voters. The armory created a bottleneck as there was one door to enter and exit; however, there are multiple doors at the DHEC office, said DeFrenn. She thanks DHEC staff for being very accommodating.
“There are no elections scheduled for these precincts until the Barnwell School Trustee election is held on April 10, 2018,” said DeFrenn.
Voters will soon be issued new voter registration cards to reflect the precinct location change.
