Local athletes selected to Border Bowl Classic

The fifth annual Border Bowl football game is less than two months away and there will be several local athletes seeing action in the talented senior clash between South Carolina and Georgia players.

Area high schools will be well represented at the event with two coaches and 13 athletes, including two cheerleaders, being named from Allendale-Fairfax High, Barnwell High, Bamberg-Ehrhardt High, Blackville-Hilda High and Williston-Elko High.

The game will be a reunion for Dwayne Garrick of Barnwell High, Derek Youngblood of Williston-Elko High and Kenneth Lipsey of Ridge Spring-Monetta. All three coached at Williston-Elko High from 2007-2013.

Leading the many selections of athletes will be Barnwell High tailback Mykal Lee.

Lee rushed for 1,032 yards this season. He was also chosen to play in the North-South All -Star classic which will be held Dec. 9 in Myrtle Beach.

Also representing Barnwell High will be Pete Elmore, Jackson Carter and Hunter Webb.

Elmore, who played quarterback for the Warhorses, will show his versatility and make the switch to defensive back for the game.

Carter was one of the Warhorses’ standouts on defense this season. He finished with 89 tackles, including 14 for losses and five forced fumbles.

Webb was a pleasant surprise for the Warhorses this season as he developed into one of the more reliable kickers in class AA this season. He connected on 28 of 30 extra points and 2 of 2 field goal attempts.

Damoray Devoe was the lone selection from Allendale-Fairfax High. Devoe was the bright spot on a one-win Tiger team this season. He finished with more than 1,200 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns.

Dawon Joyner of Blackville-Hilda High is a versatile lineman. Dawon Joyner was named to the Border Bowl and North-South All-Star game classics. Joyner will play on the offensive line in the Border Bowl and defensive line in the North-South game.

This season, Joyner was the Hawks’ top defensive lineman, finishing with 65 tackles, including 11 for losses.

Three players were selected from Williston-Elko High. They include De’Markiis Doe on offense and Evander Tyler and Meddikis Priester on defense.

Doe, who led the Blue Devils with an 18.3 average yards per catch, finished with 675 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns.

Tyler and Priester were two of the Blue Devils’ top defenders this season.

Tyler finished with 51 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions.

Priester turned in his best season with 65 tackles, five forced fumbles two fumble recoveries and two interceptions.

For the Red Raiders, Sa’Veon Butler, Nick Hughes and Jerrald Manigault were all chosen to the defensive team.

Local cheerleaders named to the game include Sommer Gibson of Barnwell High and Kaylee Wootten of Williston-Elko High.

The All-Star Classic will be held Jan. 6 at Lucy C. Laney Memorial Stadium in Augusta, Ga., at 11 a.m.
