Rotary Club seeks Secret Santas for local children
Donors and volunteers are sought again this year in support of Secret Santa, a project of the Rotary Club of Barnwell County.
“The Rotary Club of Barnwell County sponsors the Secret Santa Program each year as one of our service projects,” said Rotary Club President Michael Beasley. “This is our 21st year of sponsoring this wonderful program which could not be successful without the help of our community. Secret Santa serves many needy families who would otherwise not be able to provide Christmas gifts for their children.”
Applications are available through the Department of Social Services (DSS) and are due by Thursday, November 9, he said. DSS screens each applicant and provides a list of children ages 2-10 who qualify.
A wish list is provided for each child. Sponsors purchase toys for a needy child for around $50, said Beasley. “They are then delivered to one of our area banks (Regions, Enterprise and First Citizens) or to the Hagood Avenue Gym, 770 Hagood Ave., Barnwell, by December 13.”
“There are so many wonderful quotes about the benefits of giving to others,” said Beasley. “One of my favorites is from the late Mohammed Ali…. ‘Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.’ This certainly applies when you consider a child who may go without at Christmas but for you, your church or your business. It is said that Christmas is a time for giving. For the price of an evening out, you can bring joy to a child and a family in need,” he said.
