Restaurant serves taste of Caribbean & soul
A Barnwell native is serving up a mix of soul food and Caribbean inspired dishes at his restaurant.
Tim Sanders was riding around with his mom one day when he wanted soul food; however, he couldn’t find any in Barnwell County. This led him to open Taste of Caribbean & Soul (also known as Barnwell Caribbean) approximately two and a half years ago at 12879 Highway 278 in Barnwell.
“I’m trying to do something different,” he said.
The menu offers a fusion of the two culinary palates, such as a seafood boil of crab legs, shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob, an egg and potatoes. Other favorites include the ox tail, salads, a variety of loaded baked potatoes, baby back ribs, pork chops and several seafood dishes. They also have soul food favorites like mac and cheese and potato salad. Chicken wings are 50 cents on Wednesday nights.
Whether they prefer soul food or Caribbean, “I like seeing people happy, satisfied and full,” said Sanders, who aims to keep prices affordable.
In addition to the regular menu, Barnwell Caribbean offers a lunch menu. Some meals, such as a fried pork chop and two sides, are as low as $5.99 while others are a few dollars more.
The restaurant is not only a favorite among locals, but also attracts people from outside of Barnwell County, including Ronald and Parrie Hook who come from Orangeburg at least two or three times a month.
“It’s a good place to come and has a wide variety of things to choose from. It’s all very flavorful,” said Ronald as he and his wife dined on Oct. 8.
It’s a great place to bring the family,” said Parrie.
Sanders said he appreciates the support of all of his customers and encourages anyone who hasn’t tried their food to come by. They offer delivery to anywhere in Barnwell County.
Barnwell Caribbean is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 1 to 10 p.m., and on Sundays from 1 to 8 p.m.
