Gloria Jean Cohen (Allendale)
Ms. Gloria Jean Cohen, aka “Peaches”, age 54, was born on September 27, 1963, in Allendale to Josephine Bassett and James Ward.
Seeking God’s direction and guidance, she joined the Doe Pond Missionary Baptist Church in Martin.
She was a 1981 graduate from Allendale-Fairfax High School in Allendale and later furthered her education at Benedict College in Columbia and OC Tech in Orangeburg where she studied Child Care and Business Administration.
She worked at the Allendale-Barnwell DSN Board / Children’s Center.
“Peaches”, as she was affectionately known, will be remembered for the love she had for her family, friends, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Besides her grandparents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Ben Isaac Grant and James Ward Jr.
Our Heavenly Father called her from labor to reward on November 19, 2017, at the Augusta University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
She leaves to cherish her beautiful memory, one son, Alton B. Cohen of Allendale; loving parents, Josephine B. Cohen and James Ward of Allendale; special father, Eugene Cohen of Allendale; four sisters, Carolyn Chess of Fairfax, Stacey (James) Kearse and Wendy (Keion) Frazier of Barnwell, and Melissa Owens of Williston; two brothers, David Owens of Allendale and Ricky Owens of Barnwell; four sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; four aunts, Nora Bassett, Lillie M. Gill, and Hettie Bassett, all of Allendale, and Marie Young of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; three uncles, Charlie Bassett, and Roosevelt Bassett of Philadelphia, Pa., and Ellis Young Sr., of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and sympathizing friends.
A Celebration of Life Service was held on Friday, November 24, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Doe Pond Missionary Baptist Church in Martin with Pastor Riley Brown providing words of comfort. Marion Grant, Michael Priester, Jerell Myers, Cartea Chess, Timothy Myers, and James Kearse served as pallbearers while Hell’s Angels/Class of 1981 served as flower attendants. Burial followed at the Doe Pond Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
B.F. Cave Funeral Home in Allendale assisted the family with arrangements.
