Driver charged in fatal wreck
One man is dead and another is charged with felony driving under the influence as the result of a Sunday morning accident.
Collin Carroll, 21, of Patterson Mill Road, Barnwell, was pronounced dead about 2:45 a.m. from injuries received in a one-car motor vehicle collision, according to a press release from the Barnwell County Coroner’s Office. Carroll was a passenger of the vehicle.
Charged with felony DUI resulting in a death is Austin D. Hubbard, 21, of Barnwell, said Lance Cpl. Matt Southern with the S.C. Highway Patrol
According to Southern, Hubbard was driving a 2005 Ford pickup southbound on Harris Road near Joey Zorn Boulevard in Barnwell around 2:21 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14. The vehicle veered off the left side of the road, hit an embankment and overturned. Carroll, who was in the front passenger seat, was ejected, said Southern.
Jasmine Dell, 17, Kristopher Satterthwaite, 21, and a 16-year-old female juvenile, all of Barnwell, were back seat passengers, but none sustained injuries, according to the SCHP.
None of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing restraints, reported both the SCHP and the coroner.
Toxicology is pending, according to the coroner.
Hubbard was booked and released to the Barnwell County Detention Center, said the trooper. On Tuesday, Jan. 16, Hubbard was in Barnwell magistrate court for a bond hearing where he was granted a $25,000 cash surety bond.
The accident continues to be under investigation by the Barnwell County Coroner’s Office and the S.C. Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
