Chili supper to raise money for pet oxygen masks

A local animal rescue group is raising money to purchase pet oxygen masks for Barnwell County’s 11 fire departments.

GROWL is sponsoring a Chili Extravaganza on Thursday, Jan. 25 at the Williston Fire Department (13120 Main Street, Williston). Lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. Plates are $8 and include chili or vegetable soup, cornbread, salad, dessert and a drink. Eat in or takeout available.

The group has committed to purchase 15 pet oxygen masks. One will be placed on the fire engine of each of the 11 departments, as well as the fire coordinator’s vehicle and a couple of the town fire chiefs’ official vehicles.

“This will enable the firemen and first responders the ability to assist any animals that find themselves in the midst of a structure fire. These masks have proven to save many pets lives all over the country and we would like for Barnwell County to have this service on their trucks so our citizens know their animals will have that extra assistance when needed,” said Dawn Pennington with GROWL, who plans to have these units installed in March.

Pennington thanks Michael Schumpert from the Elko Fire Department for advocating for this mission. “GROWL is honored to be able to do this for the residents of Barnwell County and the opportunity to work with some amazing firemen who have advocated for this service on their trucks,” she said.

Tickets for the Chili Extravaganza will be available at the door.
