On Thursday in tennis action, the Williston-Elko High varsity girls continued their winning ways by posting a 4-3 victory over Midland Valley High School.
It was a hard-fought win for the Lady Blue Devil squad. The team dropped three of the top four singles matches, but rebounded with wins in the next two matches, including both doubles.
With the win, Williston-Elko High improves to 9-3 in the standings.
Williston-Elko High head coach Bernard Walters said the players stepped up in a very competitive match.
"We fell behind at the start, but I thought if we kept our poise and kept pushing, good things would happen," Walters said.
"Overall this is the best team performance we've had this year. Outstanding effort by everyone."
In No. 2 singles, Sara Gainey secured her seventh victory of the season in a tiebreaker win over Kaitlyn Haney.
Gainey, who lost the first set 4-6, answered with victories in the next two sets with scores of 6-4 and 10-4.
The Lady Blue Devils' other victory in singles play came in the No. 5 slot by Kaitlin Hutson. Hutson ousted Megan Martin of Midland Valley in straight sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
In doubles play, Williston-Elko High's No. 1 team of Savannah Greene and Sara Gainey turned in an almost flawless performance, knocking off Eliza Lewis and Karah Mowlton of Midland Valley with score of 6-0, 6-0.
In No. 2 doubles, Octavia Mack and Chicora Platt also posted a victory.
In other action, WEHS defeated Barnwell High 4-2 on Oct. 1 to sweep the season series.
The Lady Blue Devils prevailed in the match by winning three out of five singles and the only double match played.
"This was a harder game this time for our team," Walters said. "Barnwell played us very tough. The matches were very close and could have gone either way."
The Lady Blue Devils top player, Savannah Greene scored a 6-4, 6-1 win over Jordan O'Neal of the Lady Warhorses.
In No. 2 singles, Sara Gainey of WEHS topped Shelby Peay of BHS by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.
Down 2-0, Barnwell rebounded with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to even the match. Sydney Scruggs of BHS netted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Shelby Mitchum of WEHS. Barnwell's Anne McCoy prevailed over Alexis Valley of WEHS by scores of 6-3 and 6-3.
Myesha Jeter of the Lady Blue Devils stopped Barnwell's string of victories with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jacinth Samraj of the Lady Warhorses.
In No. 2 doubles, Chicora Platt and Kaitlin Hutson aced Hirali Patel and Kelsey Peay with scores of 6-0 and 6-0.
