While many packed Walmart Thanksgiving night for Black Friday deals, one man is accused of stealing a customer's wallet.
Arthur Lee Felder, 43, of 110 Allison Dr., Barnwell, snatched a female customer's wallet as she was shopping inside the store shortly after 9 p.m., Nov. 22, said Barnwell Police Chief Todd Gantt.
A civilian then pursued Felder in the store, "tackled him and got the lady's wallet back," said Gantt. Felder then punched the good Samaritan in the jaw before running off.
Barnwell officers and sheriff's deputies, who were on patrol at and around the store during the special sale, quickly apprehended Felder in the store's parking lot.
Felder was released to the Barnwell County Detention Center where he was charged with purse snatching. He is not facing assault charges at this time because the civilian who was hit did not want to press charges, said Gantt.
Other than some pushing, shoving and cursing, the purse snatching was the "most major event" Gantt knew of related to Black Friday shopping. Overall, "it went fine," he said.
Gantt said this is what can happen anytime there is a large group gathered. "That's why we do what we do," said Gantt, citing how his department has maintained a presence during the sale at Walmart for several years.
