Deacon Matthew Jenkins celebrated his 88th birthday Dec. 3, 2012, surrounded by family.
He enjoyed his favorite meal, braised short ribs, followed by cake and ice cream.
Jenkins, a WWII Army Veteran, has been a lifelong resident of the Barnwell area growing up in the Dunbarton community. Jenkins served overseas in places such as England during the war.
He and his wife corresponded by letter during the war.
He retired from Flour Daniels and is a very talented songster, singing old timey gospel hymns.
He is the chairman of Deacons at St. Thomas Grove Baptist Church.
His favorite pastimes are attending various church events and watching game shows and sports on television.
Fondly known as PaPa, he enjoys family and a special relationship with his son, Jr.
Jenkins has five children, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Jenkins' son, Matt Jr. and daughter-in-law Betty hosted the dinner.
