‘Eye of the Tiger’ A-F boys win in a rout

Balanced scoring carried the Allendale-Fairfax High varsity boys basketball team to a 70-26 rout of Branchville High Friday night in the Tigers' Den.
For a brief moment Branchville High did all it could to keep pace with Allendale-Fairfax High.
The Yellowjackets, however, didn't have the offensive ammunition to keep paced with an Allendale-Fairfax squad which jetted to a 48-14 halftime lead.
Allendale-Fairfax High's offensive arsenal struck from every area as a season high 13 players tallied points.
Allendale-Fairfax High shot a season high 56.3 percent from the floor and was helped by 31 turnovers by Branchville High. The Tigers were able to convert the turnovers into 28 points.
The victory was the fourth in a row for Allendale-Fairfax. The Tigers improve to 9-4 in the standings.
AFHS coach Coby Brandyburg said the team came out with a lot of excitement.
"We started with good intensity tonight. We distributed the ball well on offense. Defensively, we forced turnovers and controlled the boards. This was a very good team performance," said Brandyburg.
Jamell McMillian, who led all scorers with 15 points, erupted for 12 points in the opening quarter. Allendale-Fairfax High outscored Branchville High 31-4 in the first quarter.
A cast of Allendale-Fairfax High offensive supporters also included Jahnari Devoe, Rashard McKnight, Sabrien Hay, Shawn Riley, Youshi Kirkland and Michael Jordan.
Devoe did most of his damage in the interior with eight of his 10 points in the paint. McKnight had a good all-around performance with seven points, six steals, six rebounds and four assists. Hay was solid with six points, five steals and three assists.
Rounding out the scoring were Shawn Riley, Youshi Kirkland, Denzel Washington, Michael Taylor and Michael Jordan with four points each.
On Jan. 8 in region play, the Tigers clawed their way from behind for a 64-54 victory over the Bethune-Bowman High Mowhawks.
The Tigers, who trailed 13-6 after the opening quarter, outscored the Mohawks by a margin of 58-41 the rest of the way.
For the Tigers, four players scored in double digits led by Devoe with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Others shining included Solomon McCormick, who posted a double double with 13 points and 10 assists. Michael Jordan had 12 points and Sabrien Hay provided 11 points and seven steals.
