Band Camp Scholarship
The Southwestern District of the South Carolina Federation of Music Clubs (SCFMC) will hold auditions for summer scholarships will be held Saturday, Jan. 19 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Bamberg. They begin at 10 a.m. in church fellowship hall.
Scholarships to Furman University, University of South Carolina or Bob Jones University are for students in grades 8-12, while those for Brevard Music Center are for ages 14-18. Any student living in the Southwestern District is eligible, which includes Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Hampton and Orangeburg counties.
Applications and a $5 registration fee are due Jan. 12 to the scholarship chairman, Claudia Sandifer (P.O. Box 31, Bamberg, S.C. 29003).

MLK Day Celebrations
On Thursday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. in Massachusetts Hall Auditorium, Voorhees College will celebrate the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with James Edward Holiday, pastor of Bushy Pond Missionary Baptist Church in Norway.

In observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday holiday, the African American Culture Center will sponsor the second annual Dr. MLK Unity March on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. in front of Simpson United Methodist Church. The walk will proceed up Memorial Avenue to the grounds of the Allendale County Courthouse where a brief program will be held.

The Barnwell-Blackville Branch of the NAACP will host a Martin Luther King Jr. program Sunday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church (3076 Dexter St., Blackville). The speaker will be Dr. Herman L. Wallace.
Williston Community Service Club will host their annual Martin Luther King Jr. walk in downtown Williston on Jan. 21. The walk will start at 10 a.m. in front of the Williston District 29 district office and go to the Clubhouse for a program. Transportation will be provided for those who are unable to walk.

The Allendale County Democratic Party will host the second annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Allendale-Fairfax High School (Hwy. 278 E., Allendale). This year's special focus is the recognition and celebration of Allendale County African-American elected officials past and present. The guest speaker is Sen. Clementa Pinckney representing S.C. Senate District 45.
The cost is a donation of $15 per person or $100 for a table of eight.

Blood Drive
Shepeard Community Blood Center will host a blood drive Friday, Jan. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. in a bloodmobile located in the parking lot of The People-Sentinel (9988 Dunbarton Blvd., Barnwell). January donors will be entered for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card.
Donors are asked to bring their donor ID card or other picture ID, and to drink plenty of water before donating.

Early Childhood Conference
Barnwell County First Steps and Aiken Barnwell Head Start will host the "Bridging, Understanding and Learning Conference 2013" on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at Barnwell Primary School.
The free conference is for parents, early care and education professionals, local partnering agencies and the broader community to overcome educational barriers and strengthen Barnwell County's system for quality early childhood development.

Food Giveaway
Angel Wings Food Bank will have a food giveaway on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon for anyone in locally in need of food.

Career Fair
The S.C. Department of Corrections is hosting a career fair Saturday, Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Allendale Correctional Institution (1057 Revolutionary Trail, Fairfax). They are seeking qualified applicants for the position of correctional officer II.
A valid driver's license is required and applicants should be dressed for an interview. They should also be at least 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or GED, have no criminal record, and if hired be able to pass a physical exam.

Merchant Drop-in
The Blackville Downtown Development Association invites area residents to a drop-in honoring the Blackville merchants Monday, Jan. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center. Light refreshments will be served.

Kidney Class
A Kidney Smart education class will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at Davita Dialysis Center in Aiken (775 Medical Park Dr.).
The free class encourages participants to take control of their kidney disease, make a plan and stay the course.

Food Drive
UniHealth Post Acute Care of Barnwell (31 Wren St., Barnwell) will host a community food drive beginning Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. through Jan. 31 at 11:30 a.m.
Nonperishable and household items are needed and will benefit the Axis 1 Center of Barnwell. Items include: canned meats, rice, beans, boxed food, tea, drinks, toilet paper, napkins, soap and dish liquid.

Free Breakfast
J's Café will serve breakfast every first Sunday in the fellowship hall at Greater Faith Ministries (179 Calhoun St., Barnwell). The next date is Feb. 3 from 8 to 9:45 a.m.

Free Art Club
Jade Bolin and the Art in My Heart Club (children ages 10-18) meet at the Barnwell County Museum every Wednesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. It is free to the public; just bring your own supplies.

Spaghetti Dinner
A spaghetti dinner will be held Friday, Jan. 18, at 5 p.m. at Fritz n' Friends (15080 Dunbarton Blvd., Snelling) to raise money for a local cancer patient.
Dinners are $6 and include spaghetti, salad, bread and a brownie. Eat in or take it home.

Wonderland Circus
The Wonderland Circus is coming to Barnwell on Friday, Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Guinyard-Butler Middle School gym. It's the annual fundraiser for the Barnwell Primary School Parent Teacher Organization.
There will be a variety of acts, including trampoline, chair balancing and hand balancing, clowns, foot juggling, trapeze, illusions, poodles and music. Concessions and souvenirs will be for sale.
Advanced tickets can be purchased at the BPS office #2, and cost $3 for students and $4 for adults. Tickets at the door cost $4 for students and $5 for adults.

Valentine Gala
The Third Annual Valentine Gala benefiting the Salkehatchie Arts Center will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, from 7-11 p.m. at the USC Salkehatchie Conference Center in Allendale. There will be live and silent auctions, an open full bar, live music and dancing, and A Taste of Salkehatchie, a buffet of dishes from over 50 regional restaurants and chefs.
Tickets are $30/person or $50/couple. Tables of eight can be reserved in advance for $200. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Salkehatchie Arts Center, The Frock Shoppe, Brooker's, and Evelyn's.  
All proceeds benefit the Salkehatchie Arts Center, a non-profit retail shop featuring the works of regional artists, authors, and craftspeople.

Arts Council Membership Drive
The Marvelous Wonderettes will perform during the Feb. 5 membership drive fundraiser for the Barnwell County Arts Council starting at 7 p.m. in the Barnwell Primary School auditorium.
Tickets are on sale for $10 at Evelyn's Jewelry in Barnwell, Willie's Hardware in Blackville, Rivers Pharmacy in Williston, Brooker's Hardware in Denmark and the Salkehatchie Arts Council in Allendale. They will also be available at the door.
There are a variety of levels residents can become members - from $10 to $3,000.

A raffle fundraiser to benefit Philip Fail is going on through Saturday, Feb. 23. The prize is a 12'x8' utility barn with siding and shingles made by Don's Utility Barns.

BPS Registration
Registration for 4-year-old Pre-K and 5K at Barnwell Primary School will be held the following dates from 8 to 11 a.m. in building 1: Jan. 15-18 for 4 Pre-K; Feb. 12-15 for 4 Pre-K; Feb. 20-22 for 4 Pre-K & 5 K; March 26-29 for 4 Pre-K & 5 K; and April 24-26 for 4 Pre-K & 5K. Children must be four or five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2013.
The following records are required for registration: S.C. Shot Record (long white form from your doctor or the health dept.); Certified Birth Certificate; Child's Social Security Card; two current dated proofs of residence in parent's name and address; and a $15 material fee due at registration (5K only)

BHS Financial
Aid Workshop
Barnwell High School Guidance Office is offering a free Financial-Aid Workshop to seniors and their parents on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the media center at Barnwell High School.
Mike Smith, financial aid representative from USC Salk, will conduct the workshop. Many questions will be addressed concerning every possible aid available to finance further education as well as information concerning the U.S. government financial aid forms.
KEES Registration
Registration for 4-year-old kindergarten and 5-year-old kindergarten at Kelly Edwards Elementary School will be held Jan. 28 through Feb. 8. Children must be four or five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2013.
The following items are required for registration: Immunization Records, Birth Certificate, Child's Social Security Card, proof of residence in parent's name and address such as current electric or water bill/statement within the district and the parent's driver license or other state or federal photograph identification, Medicaid Card (4 year old only), and Proof of Income (4 year old only).  

JDA Financial
Aid Workshop 
JDA is offering a free Financial-Aid Workshop for seniors and their parents on Monday, Feb. 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. It will last no longer than an hour.
Julie Hadwin, financial-aid director at USC-Salkehatchie, will conduct the workshop. She will provide general information on lottery scholarships, grants and loans as well as how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
