Any questions concerning the Denmark-Olar High girls varsity basketball team's confidence after a season ending 45-41 loss to Whale Branch-were answered in the first eight minutes of Monday's opening round playoff game against St. John's High.
Denmark-Olar High got back on the winning track by imposing its will on both ends of the court in 50-30 rout.
The Lady Islanders didn't have the offensive firepower to keep pace with an up tempo Lady Viking squad.
Junior Ta'Asia Wright highlighted the offense as the Lady Vikings sailed to a 22-13 halftime lead and never looked back.
Wright turned in another double double performance with 15 points, 12 rebounds and six steals.
Wright said a quick start was the key to victory.
"I thought we played very well tonight," Wright said. "Our goal was to push the ball at the start and make it a fast paced game. This was a big win for our team. We believe we have a chance to make a good run in the playoffs."
Defensively, the Lady Vikings held the Lady Islanders to six of 24 shooting from the field in the first half.
With the win, Denmark-Olar High advances to the second round of the class A playoffs.
The Lady Vikings will play Carvers Bay High at home Thursday at 7 p.m.
Denmark-Olar High coach Ashley Patterson said the team played well, but there's still room for improvement.
"I'm very happy to be moving on in the playoffs," Patterson said. "We played well at times tonight, but we have to be more discipline on the court. We had several mistakes."
Offensively, the Lady Vikings also received good performances from Je'Nayah Moore, Daniesha Youmans, Jessica Davis and Jalonda Odom.
Moore, who led the team with nine assists added 13 points and seven steals. Youmans came on strong in the second half, scoring eight of her 10 points. Davis also had a strong second half with six third-quarter points Odom finished with four points and five rebounds.
Several other shining were Garce Johnson, Tyneka Sanders and Satara Jenkins.
