School Supply Drive this week
The S.C. Bar Young Lawyers Division is collecting backpacks and other school supplies for donation to schools and students throughout Barnwell, Aiken and Bamberg counties. Supplies are being collected through Wednesday, Aug. 14, for donation to local schools in need.
Supplies can be dropped off at the following locations: Richardson Patrick Westbrook & Brickman, LLC (1730 Jackson St., Barnwell), Wilson, Luginbill & Kirkland, LLC (3056 Railroad Ave., Bamberg), Solicitor's Office (109 Park Ave., Aiken), Solicitor's Worthless Check Unit (1680 W. Richland Ave., Ste. 80, Aiken), and Bradley L. Boni, LLC (759 W. Richland Ave., Aiken).
In conjunction with National Health Center Week (Aug. 11-17), Barnwell Family Medicine and Family Medical Center of Blackville will host a health fair Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon in Barnwell Family Medicine's large conference room (86 Wren St., Barnwell).
Nurses will be on site to provide free blood pressure screenings, blood sugar screenings, BMI testing, food, give-a-ways, and more.

Barnwell State Park is hosting a Trivia Night on Friday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. in the community building. It's for anyone who is camping or staying in one of their cabins. Get to know your fellow campers and neighbors as you enjoy fun-filled, friendly competition.

Pet Adoption Day
The Animal Advocates are hosting an adoption day Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Tractor Supply in Barnwell. Foster animals from their center will be available for adoption and they will be selling hot dogs, chips and a drink for $3. Hot dogs will have all of the trimmings, including homemade chili and homemade slaw.
Their Friends for Life Adoption Center will also be open for adoptions that day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Original Six Foundation's statewide book drive will be collecting gently used or new children's and South Carolina history books. The public can donate books in collection boxes at all 67 Department of Motor Vehicle offices across South Carolina through Aug. 17.
The books will be donated to libraries, schools, and afterschool programs in the rural counties that The Original Six Foundation serves. The Original Six Foundation is currently working in conjunction with Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Clarendon, Marion, Marlboro, and Union counties.
Blackville Supply Giveaway
The Together Sisters' annual School Supply Giveaway will be Aug. 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Moloney Field in Blackville. Monetary and supply donations are accepted.

Circle Theatre in Barnwell will hold their annual awards night on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Barnwell County Museum. The community, and especially everyone involved in the past season, is invited. There will be food, entertainment, awards for the past season, season tickets for sale, and the unveiling of the new season lineup.

Meet & Greet
Join the Barnwell County Arts Council and the Barnwell County Museum as they host Denmark artist Jim Harrison for an evening of "Big Art from a Small Town" on Thursday, Aug. 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Effie Fuller Center (9426 Marlboro Ave., Barnwell) behind the museum. It is free to the public.
Harrison has more than 100 sold out, limited edition prints made from his paintings and thousands of collectors of his work across the country. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Harrison, learn more about his prints, view crafty table decor, and enjoy great food.
Shepeard Community Blood Center will host a blood drive Friday, Aug. 23, from 1 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot of The People-Sentinel. All donors will be entered to win one of six sets of tickets to the Advocare 500 Nascar Sprint Cup Series Labor Day weekend race and Billy Currington concert on Sunday, Sept. 1 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
The Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce invites residents to a Legislative Wrap-Up on Monday, Aug. 26, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Barnwell County Library.
Sen. Brad Hutto and Rep. Lonnie Hosey will share information on legislation passed last session while County Council Chairman Freddie Houston will summarize the past year for Barnwell County Council.
The leaders will also be available to answer questions from residents.
Cub Scout Sign-up Night will be Aug. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Barnwell First Baptist Church activity center. Cub Scouts are for boys in first through fifth grade.

Dr. Clark Retirement Party
Uni-Health Post Acute Care of Barnwell will host a retirement party for Dr. Clark on Aug. 30 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The American Cancer Society invites cancer patients in Barnwell, Bamberg, Allendale or Hampton counties to signup for the Look Good Fell Better session on Monday, Sept. 16. This free session will be held at the Barnwell City Hall at 6 p.m.
Cosmetology professionals will help patients with makeup application, tips for wig selection and wig care, dry skin, discolored nails, scarves, turbans and hats.

Third Thursday returns Sept. 19 from 5-7 p.m. in downtown Barnwell with entertainment by V&N Entertainment (Virginia Nettles and Neal Richardson).
Residents are encouraged to help "Stuff the Station" (old police station) with needed supplies for local teachers. Supplies can also be brought before Sept. 19 to city hall. Items needed include: Copy Paper, Legal Note Pads, Dry Erase Markers, Sharpie Permanent Markers, Crayola Markers, Scotch Tape refills, Tape Dispensers, File Folders
In partnership with the United Way, a health fair will be held. Several local medical groups will have health information and some will provide simple health checks, like blood pressure.
A Bike Rodeo will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon at Snelling Park. All ages can bring their bikes. There will be bike safety and fit checks, bike safety presentation, bike obstacle course, and goodie bags.

Pick Up with Pride, a community clean-up campaign, will be held Saturday, Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. to noon. Meet on the Circle in downtown Barnwell to sign in and pick up any supplies. Trucks are needed to help pick up trash bags.
The Farmers' Market in Elko is open every Saturday until mid-fall at the corner of Hwys. 78 and 37. In promoting healthy diets and lifestyles, there is a walking club and a children's club.

Canned Food Drive in Barnwell
Through Aug. 16, Allie Padgett, representative of Miss Heart of the USA S.C. pageant system, is trying to collect 500 cans for Harvest food bank and other food services. Drop-off locations are at Light of the Lamb thrift store on the Circle in Barnwell, Barnwell Fire Department, and Dollar General in Williston.
The Salkehatchie Arts Center in Allendale will hold a Country Cookin' Lunch to raise money for the Arts Center on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 each and include chicken perleau, country vegetables, salad, and dessert for eat-in or take-out. Buy four or more tickets, and get a free Arts Center Cookbook ($18 value). Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Arts Center or at the door.

MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) is hosting a Vendor and Craft Fair on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon at Generations Unlimited (10913 Ellenton St., Barnwell). Proceeds will fund craft expenses and community service projects.
Cost per vendor or crafter by Aug. 23 is $25 and a door prize donation. It goes up to $40 and a door prize the day of the event.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Foundation invites you for a morning of fun and competition at the "Jailbreak Escape Urban Challenge Run" on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Lexington County Sheriff's Department (521 Gibson Rd., Lexington).
Packet pick-up and late registration begins at 6:15 a.m. with the race at 8 a.m.
Participants will race in two person teams. It costs $50 for a two-person team before Sept. 5 or $30 for one person. After Sept. 5 it costs $65 for a two-person team or $35 for single entry.
Through special events and private contributions, the Lexington County Sheriff's Foundation raises funds to purchase equipment, materials, training, and supplies for the Sheriff's Department, when not otherwise provided for in the Department's annual budget.
