Herbert LeGrande Betsill
Herbert LeGrande Betsill, Wiggins, Miss., died Dec. 25, 2008 at his residence.
Funeral service was held Jan. 3, 2009 at Barnwell Presbyterian Church in Barnwell with burial at Reedy Branch Cemetery in Barnwell. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Betsill was born on Aug. 27, 1915 in Union. He was the son of the late David Shelton and Mary Moore Betsill. He worked with the South Carolina Highway Department in Columbia. In 1942 he began his career in civil service as an Engineer with the United States Navy Yard in Charleston. In 1956, his career turned to aerospace engineering when he moved to Huntsville, Alabama. He was one of the first aerospace engineers in the early years of the space program in Huntsville. He retired from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville in 1975. He was predeceased by a brother, James Lawrence Betsill; a sister, Kathleen Betsill Culler, and three infant siblings.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Gladys Black Betsill of Wiggins, Miss.; one daughter, Rosemary Betsill (David) Raines and two granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Marks Episcopal Church, 11322 East Taylor Road, Gulfport, MS.
