Virginia Owens

Virginia Owens, 83, of Allendale, died Jan. 18, 2009 at the John Edward Harter Nursing Center.

Funeral service was held Jan. 24 at St. Mark Baptist Church, Allendale, with burial in the Trinity Cemetery. Cave Funeral Services, Inc. of Allendale was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Owens was born Nov. 2, 1925 in Allendale County. She was the daughter of the late Lucius Smith and Hattie Smith Bostick. She was married to the late Herbert Owens Sr. She was a member of Near Rivers Baptist Church. As a member, she worked as a choir member, a member of the missionary society and was church secretary, until her health failed. She was predeceased by four siblings, William Smith, Melvin Smith, Clara Ann Holmes and Johnny Smith and a son-in-law, Freddie Washington.

Survivors include her children, Herbert (Katie) Owens Jr., Rosa Washington, Lena Green and George (Martha) Owens, all of Allendale, Linda (Benjamin) Dennis, Patricia Baker of Charleston, Evangelist Juanita McFadden of Augusta, Ga., Ernestine (Rayfield) Warren of Panama City, Fla. and Williette Owens of Columbia; five brothers, Lucius (Deloris) Smith Jr. of Brunson, Andrew Smith and Holman Smith, both of Allendale, Eugene Smith of Cocoa, Fla. and Herlie (Ruby) Smith of Titusville, Fla.; one sister, Anna Bunch of Allendale; stepsisters, Annie Mae Singleton of Newark, N. J. and Ella Mae Smoaks, also of N. J.; one sister-in-law, Ira Bell Williams of Allendale; one brother-in-law, Roosevelt Owens of Hallendale, Fla.; 32 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.
