Willie Pope - Barnwell

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91: 1-2

Mr. Willie Pope, 83, of Barnwell, was born on February 12, 1934 to the late Beatrice Trottie in Barnwell. Willie entered eternal rest on June 1, 2017.

Willie attended school in Barnwell County Public School system. In 1951 Willie entered the United States Navy. He was employed at Kaiser Restaurant for 17 years, the City of Barnwell, and retired from the City of Augusta, Department of Water Works.

Preceding him in death: an aunt, Carrie B. Gay; two sons; Michael and Reggie Pope; a daughter, Carrie Mae Pope; and a stepdaughter Debbie Clark.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories: his loving wife of the home, Shirley Ann Pope; five daughters: Alicia Pope and Valerie Pope (California), Linda Pope, Juanita Pope, and Sylvia Pope (Savannah, Ga.); one son, Willie Pope Jr. (California); a step-son, Billie Clark (Augusta, Ga.); and four step-daughters: Olivia (Bernard) Buckmon (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Ethel Mae Clark and Mary Clark (Barnwell), and Treyon (Vernon) Nelson (Charleston); an aunt, Betty Pickens (Lawrence, N.C.); 49 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends will also keep his memories alive in their hearts.

Services were held on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 181 Church St., Barnwell. Interment followed at Hope Memorial Cemetery in Barnwell. Informal visitation was held on Thursday, June 8, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Guinyard and Sons Funeral Home Chapel.
