Charles “Charlie” Franklin Hartzog

Charles “Charlie” Franklin Hartzog, 86, of Barnwell passed away February 3, 2012 at the Barnwell County Hospital.
Mr. Charlie was born August 14, 1926 to Charles Ann and Vernon Gray Hartzog. He was the youngest of four children – the late Louise Bearden, the late Novice Folk and the late Narcissa “Sis” Hair.
Mr. Charlie attended Clemson University; however, he returned home to help his widowed mother operate the family farm. He worked as a Superintendent at Holland Atlantic Hitch Company for many years and later farmed for several years before traveling the country as an electrician, until his retirement.
Later in life, he enjoyed his family, football (especially the Clemson Tigers), his farm and garden, weekly visits to the Springfield Flea Market and attending church while his health permitted.
He received a 60 year Masonic pin and belonged to the Shriners. He was a lifelong member of Double Pond Baptist Church.
Mr. Charlie is survived by his wife, Burnette McMichael Hartzog; son, Charles Michael Hartzog; daughter Tami Charlene Hartzog and Aaron James Gurney. He is also survived by Phillip Bearden, Drew Bearden, Charles Asa Bearden, Emily Gooding, Libby Marchent, Annette Hightower, Margaret Smith and Lynn Kilgus.
In accordance with Mr. Charlie’s final wishes, he funeral services was attended by his immediate family and caregivers. A memorial service for family and friends celebrating his life through pictures anecdotes and devotionals will be held at a future date.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in the name of Charles F. Hartzog to your local Alzheimer’s Association.
Mr. Charlie loved his family and friends, church, heritage, community and family farm. His family asks that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
The family has entrusted Dyches Funeral Home with the arrangements.
