Joseph Samuel Hicks

Joseph Samuel Hicks, 78, of Rock Hill, died Sept. 25, 2009 at UniHealth Post Acute Care facility.
Funeral service was held Sept. 28 at the Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel. Graveside service followed at Grandview Memorial Park, South Cherry Road, Rock Hill. Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel in Rock Hill was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Hicks was born Sept. 12, 1931 in Alexander Mills, N.C. He was the son of the late Wayne Jackson and Lorena Kendrick Hicks. He was a master craftsman and woodworker for more than 50 years. Mr. Hicks made custom cabinets and handmade furniture for homes, churches and businesses in the region. A Navy veteran during the Korean conflict, he also worked as a supervisor at Celanese and General Tire plants. He was a member of Neely's Creek ARP Church and a founding member of NewKirk Baptist Church in Rock Hill. He was a Mason and Shriner. He was predeceased by two brothers, Jack Hicks and Robert Hicks of Forest City, N.C.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ada Purcell Hicks of Rock Hill; five sons, J. Samuel (Trula) Hicks Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Robert James (Connie) Hicks of Rock Hill, John Purcell Hicks of Newry, Charles David (Karen) Hicks of Greenwood and Timothy Kendrick Hicks of Barnwell; two brothers: Clyde Hicks of Monroe, N.C. and Benjamin David Hicks of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Edith Hicks McGuirt of Darlington; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
