McKinley "Rat" Calhoun Sr., 66, of Blackville, died Sept. 25, 2009 at the VA Medical Center, Decatur, Ga.
Funeral service was held Oct. 3 at Bethlehem Baptist church, Barnwell, with the Rev. Dr. John H. Ritter officiating. Burial was in the Hope Memorial Park, Inc., Barnwell. Lebby Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Calhoun was born Oct. 3, 1942. He was the son of the late George and Georgia Hughes Calhoun Sr. He was an Army veteran having served during the Vietnam conflict and was honorably discharged. He was employed at Shuron in Barnwell for several years. In 1988, he became self-employed as a carpenter and electrician.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Emily Calhoun of the home; one daughter, Lisa (Paul) Nelson of Blackville; two sons, McKinley (Wanda) Calhoun Jr. of Barnwell and Darryl (Debra) Salley of Williston; step mother, Bernetha Calhoun of Barnwell; sisters, Ethel Hutto and Dorothy Waters, both of Riviera Beach, Fla., Mary (Thorton) Sawyer Dixon of Blackville, Emma Peeples of Barnwell and the Rev. Sarah (Min. Jimmy) Perkins of Augusta, Ga.; brothers, Walter Calhoun of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Carl Cave Jr., Donald (Mary) Cave and Gregory (Brenda) Cave, all of Barnwell; sisters-in-law, Mae Edwards, Sarah (Bob) Rivers of Philadelphia, Pa. and Mary Monger of Barnwell; brother-in-law, William H. James Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa.; one god daughter, Kimira Perkins of Germany; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson and a host of other relatives and friends.
