The Covenants of the Church: Week 2
Thank you for reading the Church Covenant. This is Week Two of the Church Covenant.
I know as you rediscover the Church Covenant, you will come to realize how wonderful your salvation is to you! I believe you will also come to realize how great it is to be a member of the local church, which is the Family of God. You will also discover how important you are to God and to His church. I hope you will discover the joy of supporting the church of our living Lord!
This week is about the Giving Spirit of the Covenant. The central theme of this part of the covenant is Christians are to work together to fulfill the mission of the church:
“We engage therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love, to strive for the advancement of His Church, in knowledge, holiness, and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospel through all nations.”
With God’s help we can meet our covenant obligations, but we cannot do it alone. To walk together in Christian love: as the love of Christ fills our lives, we share his love with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
This is not an option! Jesus said a new command I give you: love one another as I have loved you. By this, all men will know you are my disciples by the way you love one another.
To strive for the advancement of the church: How loyal are you to your church? The early church stuck together because they needed one another. I can tell you today we need one another!
A young man who was dissatisfied with his church described it as a big, sick elephant. It had plenty of size, but all it could do was be there and struggle to breathe. No one would get up and do anything. The young man said all the people do is listen to the sermon and go home. Nobody wants to get involved in doing anything.
I want to remind you that you are important to God and His church that’s founded in Jesus Christ and empowered by Jesus Christ.
To sustain its worship, ordinances, disciplines, and doctrines: Hebrews 10:25, let us not give up worshiping together, observe the ordinances, the Lord’s Supper, baptism.
To contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of its ministry: Giving is an act of worship and begins with the tithe. We share the responsibility for providing needful ministries such as relief for the poor and mission support. I heard of one church giving millions of dollars to a college. My question was what are they doing with a million dollars when the world is full of people that are starving for physical and spiritual food? Hope they don’t have a million dollars when Jesus comes (too late to help).
We must work together to fulfill the missions of the church. Ye shall be my witness in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Acts 1:8.
The Giving Spirit of the Covenant means we are first to give ourselves to Jesus Christ, be a partaker of His grace.
Maybe you would like to take a copy of the church covenant and place it in your Bible. It would remind you of who we are and how important the church is in your life.
Thank you for reading. Next week Part III. Don’t miss it!
