Covenants of the Church: Week 3
We also engage to religiously educate our children, to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances, to walk circumspectly in the world, to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger; to abstain from the sale of and use of destructive drugs, or intoxicating drinks as a beverage; to shun pornography, to be zealous in our efforts to advance the Kingdom of our Savior.
The Living Spirit of the Covenant speaks to the do’s of Christian living. When people receive Christ, they commit themselves to public worship.
We also commit to religiously educate our children. The most precious moment of my childhood was at night before bedtime. Mother would gather all her children around the table and read God’s Word and pray for us.
Christians pledge to live so others will see Jesus Christ in their lives. We sometimes have difficultly knowing who the real Christians are. God has no problem!
To walk circumspectly in the world: We are to act responsibly. Remember who you are – saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. We are to be honest and just in our dealings. Did you hear about Abraham Lincoln, who when he overcharged a man six cents by mistake, he walked three miles to return it?
Faithful in our engagements: We are to keep our commitments and be true to our promises.
To seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances: As Christians we are to seek to win others to saving faith in Jesus Christ. The living spirit speaks of the do’s in life of a Christian, and also speaks of the do not’s in the life a Christian.
A little girl went next door and picked some flowers from her neighbor’s garden. The neighbor confronted her about it. The little girl replied, “Mommy didn’t tell me I couldn’t do it.”
I think God expects us to use common sense. Tattling and back-biting are not Christ-like. They create strife and friction rather than friendship and fellowship.
Avoid excessive anger: We see too much anger and bitterness in our world today. The Living Spirit of the Covenant says we are to avoid intoxicating drinks. Drug abuse has no place in the Christian’s life. Drug abuse is the ruination of any nation. Pornographic materials represent another deadly force, and have destroyed many families.
Remember the do’s and the do not’s of the Church Covenant. Live a life that others can see Christ living in you. Be careful never to do anything that would cause a weaker brother to fall.
Live out your faith each day of your life.
