Superintendent Johnson: D19 ready to 'meet or exceed' standards
Dear Blackville-Hilda Community:
It is with great anticipation that we look forward to the upcoming 2017-2018 school year in Barnwell District 19.
We set ambitious goals for our district last year. With the support of the Barnwell 19 School Board along with the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff, I am proud to say that we met, and in many cases, exceeded the goals we set as a district. I am certain the success experienced last year will further fuel our work to ensure Barnwell School District 19 is recognized as one of the finest school districts in South Carolina.
Our main goal is still to ensure each student meets or exceeds our state academic achievement standards. To attain this goal, we will continue our implementation of Balanced Literacy in all grades to ensure we know our students as readers and writers, meet their individual instructional needs and produce accelerated academic achievement. All students are text leveled to find their individual reading level and we are continually adding to our classroom libraries district wide so students can be matched with a “just right” book. Our implementation of Everyday Math will continue and expand in to grade 6 so as to create more continuity for our students as they transition from elementary into middle school. Our 1:1 initiative in all schools will continue to provide our students the much needed access to technology and practice for online testing.
Barnwell District 19 knows that professional development for teachers is crucial to student success. Decades of research in education shows the number one factor in student success is the teacher. With this knowledge in mind, Barnwell 19 plans to streamline its professional development with a primary focus on helping teachers know how to help our students become “literate” in all content areas. Every teacher will receive weekly professional development on how to assist students in accessing the knowledge and curriculum for their particular subject, regardless of the subject. We want all students to know how to 1) read deeply and closely to learn and communicate in every subject, 2) use reading, writing, speaking, and listening as tools of inquiry across the disciplines, 3) learn independently and collaboratively, and 4) raise questions, solve problems, tackle challenging material and persevere through the hard parts. It is our belief that students with these skills and abilities can be successful in all areas of school regardless of the grade or subject.
My previous year in the Blackville-Hilda Public Schools has solidified my belief that the faculty and staff members of Barnwell School District 19 are some of the finest of any school district in this state. We expect exponential growth during the 2017-2018 school year. My plan is to continue to support our administrators, teachers, and support staff by establishing clear expectations, providing relevant training and professional development, and rewarding the outstanding work these professionals carry out daily. Our work to establish a positive climate in every school in our district is continuing. We are currently making plans to further upgrade our facilities, establish an atmosphere where every child will learn, and engage our stakeholders as equal partners in our children’s education.
Please join me as we work together to establish a school system in which every child, every staff member, and every parent matters.
