First sales tax project underway in county

Dear Editor,

In November 2016 Barnwell County voters approved a one cent on the dollar Capital Projects Sales Tax that will assist the County and municipalities with improvements to existing infrastructure and to add parks and other facilities that will improve our quality of life.

The County is scheduled to begin the replacement of its transfer station at the landfill later this month. The transfer station is used to transfer solid waste from our households, industries and other sources from the trash trucks you see picking up material to tractor trailers that haul it to the Three Rivers landfill off of Highway 125 near Jackson.

Our transfer station was built in the late 90’s and has endured wear and tear related to moving material into the tractor trailers, fire from industrial material that was brought in and finally being hit by a tornado last January that necessitated total replacement of the building. Due to this, material that is normally handled at our transfer station will have to be hauled to the Bamberg County transfer station. It is expected that hauling the material to Bamberg County will be necessary from late October until late December.

We appreciate Bamberg County allowing us to use their transfer station since this is less expensive than hauling directly to Three Rivers.

We look forward to getting our station replaced and starting on Project 2 - Courthouse Repairs.
