Being part of solution is a good resolution

A visit to any of Barnwell County’s governmental meetings will find that the public is welcomed and encouraged to particpate.

Yes, there are rules regarding length of time to speak. There are also rules that mean the public can speak but the councils generally do not respond or act on those comments immediately.

But what all those elected government officials really want are solutions.

Once elected, most politicians realize it is lot harder to govern than to campaign. They don’t have magic wands or bags of money to grant the wishes of the public. What they do have are ears, hearts and minds - ears to listen, hearts to care and minds to try and find solutions as best as they can.

They also want help.

There are lots of committees that need membership by people who are passionate about helping in a specific area.

Once an issue is identified, members of the public are asked for what they consider may be a solution - within the means of money, time and participation.

In 2018, we ask residents to resolve to be a part of the “solution” for Barnwell County. Don’t just complain about a problem or issue - be a part of the effort to resolve that problem.

Someone out there who has grumbled about something and stewed on it might actually be the person with just the right idea of solving the issue.

If you come to a government meeting with a problem and are tempted to say, “What are you going to do about it?”, stop and first think about what YOU would do about it. Don’t just voice the problem - offer a solution.

In addition to public governmental areas of action, there are also within our county are many, many organizations and churches that are begging for volunteers.

Be a part of the solution.

Give what time and talents you have to offer. The results might be outstanding.

We praise our local schools for requiring all students to participate in the community. At an early age they are learning that they can make a difference.

There is so much to be gained by donating your time and efforts. Even a little contribution may have large ramifications in another person’s life.

In 2018, make your resolution to be a part of the solution.
