Barnwell High boys qualify for the playoffs

As the game entered the third quarter, the Barnwell High boys varsity basketball teamwas trailing Ridgeland High by a score of 39-21 Feb. 6 in Ridgeland.

However, with its playoff hopes on the line, the Warhorses fought back, outscoring the Trojans 42-20 in the second half to pull out a 64-61 win.

Chris Mixon led the comeback for Barnwell High with 17 points, including three three-pointers. Mixon scored seven of the team's 19 points in the final quarter.

The win improves Barnwell High to 12-7 overall and 4-5 in region play.

The victory also qualifies Barnwell High for the class 2A playoff to be played at Burke High Feb. 17.

Barnwell High coach Michael Highsmith said the team showed their character during the game.

"This kids could have easily hung their heads at halftime, but they didn't. They came out and fought like champions in the second half," Highsmith said. "This was a huge win for us. We need to get this one to make sure we got into the playoffs."

Others shining offensively for Barnwell High were Nathan Felder with 10 points, six steals and six assists. Pat Green hauled in a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.

Terry Williams played superbly with 12 points, five assists and four steals. Williams was at this best in the first quarter when he scored seven of the team eight points.

Senior forward Jared Williams had a good, all-around game with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots.
