Blue Devils gut out win over Warhorses
Last Wednesday (Dec. 14) in the Devils’ Den, the Williston-Elko High varsity boys basketball team gutted out a 36-25 win over Barnwell High.
Williston-Elko High coach Jeremy Lehman said the team was a little rough around the edges.
“We didn’t play particularly well in this game. We had too many missed shots in close and we didn’t take care of the ball,”Lehman said.
Williston-Elko High, which never trailed in the contest, jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter before extending its advantage to 18-7 by halftime.
Offensively, the Blue Devils had two players to score in double digits. The offense was centered upon Keshawn Toney, who provided a double double performance with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Desmond Murray also provided a spark to the offense with 10 points, seven rebounds and six steals.
Several others playing well included Tyshawn Allen with five points and six assists, and Demarkiis Doe, who had 11 rebounds and two points.
For Barnwell High, it was pretty simple. Not enough offense and too many turnovers.
The Warhorses, who didn’t have a single player to score in double digits, connected on only three of 23 shots in the first half.
Barnwell High coach Michael Highsmith said the team needs to remedy its offensive woes.
“We beat ourselves in several ways tonight, but the main reason was our inability to put the ball in the basket,” Highsmith said.
Barnwell’s top offensive player was Tyrese Drayton with six points. Jaquez Raysor added five points.
