Area middle school basketball teams battle
In middle school basketball action, the Guinyard-Butler girls outlasted Williston-Elko 29-19 Monday night in Barnwell.
Tied at 17-17 after third quarter, the Lady Ponies pulled away with a 12-2 scoring run in the final quarter.
Fueling the Lady Ponies surge was Emoni Bennett, who scored six of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Ruth Small also came up big for the Lady Ponies with six points and seven steals.
Another playing well for Guinyard-Butler was Aneiccia Workman with three points, six steals and four assists.
Defensively, the Lady Ponies were led by Ameerah Buckman, Aneiccia Workman, Kia Bennett and Asia Green.
Williston-Elko’s top offensive performer was Yamiya Wilson with 13 points, including two three-pointers. Briana Highsmith had four points and six rebounds.Tynesha Chisolm added three points.
In other action, the Lady Ponies defeated Allendale-Fairfax 25-10 Thursday in Allendale.
For GBMS, balance scoring was the key to victory as eight different players contributed offensively.
Leading the way was Emoni Bennett with 15 points. Aneiccia Workman had four points. Players with two points included Ruth Small, Kynia Anderson and Asia Green.
In boys action, Guinyard-Butler pulled away from Allendale-Fairfax for a 44-31 win.
Leading 25-24 with 1:07 left in the third quarter, GBMS took over the game behind the shooting of Zach Bell. Bell erupted for eight of his game-high 14 points during a 19-7 run.
Also playing well for GBMS was Russell Branch with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Adam Clark, Justin Rollins and T.J. Miller added four points each.
