Barnwell Warhorses roll over BHHS Hawks
The Barnwell High Warhorses got the best of the Blackville-Hilda High Hawks by a count of 49-38 Wednesday in Barnwell.
The Warhorses led for most of the game and found a way to fend off a Hawks’ late comeback attempt.
Offensively, the Warhorses had three players to score in double figures.
One of those players was senior shooting guard Devin Creech, who had a big second half. With the Warhorses leading 25-21 early in the third quarter, Creech erupted for eight points, including two three-pointers during a 16-8 run.
The scoring run gave the Warhorses a comfortable 41-29 advantage going into the final quarter.
Creech had a monster game for the Warhorses, finishing with 15 points, nine steals, six rebounds and five assists.
Also having a good game offensively were Pete Elmore and Bobby Carter. Elmore finished with 11 points on four of nine shooting from the field and one of two from the free throw line. Carter had a good, all-around game with 10 points, six steals and five rebounds.
With the win, Barnwell High improves to 6-4 overall.
Barnwell High coach Michael Highsmith said the team continues to make strides.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our effort tonight,” Highsmith said. “I thought our players showed tremendous resiliency and togetherness. I thought we established ourselves on the defensive end early in the game. It kind of set the tempo for our offense.”
The defense was the story, especially in the first quarter when the Warhorses held the Hawks to only two points on one of 14 shooting from the floor. Pete Elmore set the pace for the unit with nine defensive rebounds and seven steals. James Mingo also shined with six defensive rebounds and a blocked shot.
Highsmith concluded it’s always sweet when you beat an incounty rival.
“These are the games you love to play. These are the games you love to battle and these are the games you love to win,” Highsmith said. “We started the season a little slow, but the players never gave up.”
“It’s great to see their hard work pay off and see it translate into a victory like this.”
