Lady Warhorses extend winning streak

The Barnwell High varsity girls easily disposed of in-county rival Williston-Elko High Wednesday night in Barnwell.

For the Lady Warhorses, a strong first half was more than enough for the team to register its sixth straight victory as they cruised past Williston-Elko High 47-26.

The win improves Barnwell High to 10-3 overall.

Barnwell High coach William Hammonds said the team played well.

“Another good performance,” Hammonds said. “Defensively, we were able to create turnovers and convert them into easy baskets. Offensively, we distributed the ball really well.”

It was a quick start for the Lady Warhorses as they galloped to a 16-2 first-quarter lead behind four points from Adriana Bell and Kyra Shuler.

Not much changed in the second quarter. The Lady Warhorses outscored the Lady Blue Devils 18-8 in this crucial department.The Lady Warhorses continued to roll. This time, Makayla Hayward scored six points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and Jessica Williams and Rachael Creech converted on a layup to extend the lead to 26-7 late in half.

Despite the hot start, the Lady Warhorses struggled a bit in the third quarter, scoring just six points on 3-of-12 shooting from the field.

Leading 35-20 in the fourth quarter, the Lady Warhorses regained their shooting. The Warhorses took advantage of the Lady Blue Devils on the fast break, creating turnovers that led to layups on the other end.

They completed the game with a 12-6 scoring edge. Hayward led the way with six points and James added four points in the fourth quarter.

For the game, Hayward led Barnwell High with 13 points and seven rebounds. Jessica Williams had seven points and six rebounds. Adriana Bell, who had a team-leading eight assists, finished with seven points. Kyra Shuler had a good, all-around game with seven points, eight steals, five assists and three rebounds. James added six points.

The Lady Blue Devils were led by Tasheeka Whetstone with nine points and 11 rebounds. Aaliyah Cuthberson had seven points, including two three-pointers.
