Tigers claw Warhorses for win
The Barnwell High and Allendale-Fairfax High boys varsity basketball game turned into a thriller Jan. 31 in Barnwell.
In a back-and-forth affair with nine lead changes, Allendale-Fairfax High pulled away at the end for a 69-59 win.
With the win, Allendale-Fairfax High moves to 3-5 in region play.
Alllendale-Fairfax High coach Coby Brandyburg said the team fought hard all the way through.
“I was really proud of how our guys showed a lot of resiliency,” Brandyburg said. “We fell behind early, but we never panicked. We displayed our mental toughness and found a way to win.”
For the Warhorses, the contest was an opportunity for payback after they suffered a 20-point loss to Allendale-Fairfax High two weeks ago.
The Warhorses started off well in their attempt to even the score. Pete Elmore had the hot hand for the team at the start, scoring nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field in the quarter. Randall Buxton joined in on the fun, scoring five points, including a three-pointer as the Warhorses built a 14-5 lead with 2:38 left in the opening quarter.
The second quarter, however, was a whole new story as the Tigers began to claw back. Highlighted by a seven-point effort by Ron Albany and a pair of putbacks by Justin Polite, the Tigers outscored the Warhorses 15-9 to take a 26-25 lead with 31 seconds left in the half.
In the third quarter, the seesaw battle continued.
For the Warhorses, Randall Buxton found his stroke from the perimeter. Buxton rattled in two 3-pointers to put the team back in front at 34-32.
Late in the third quarter, the Warhorses continued to excel as Pete Elmore, Buxton and Devin Creech all scored layups in succession for a 43-39 lead.
Trailing 45-41 early in the fourth quarter, the Tigers fought back once again.
This time, Amonta Holmes shouldered the offense. Holmes reeled off 10 points as part of a 29-16 scoring run in the final quarter. Holmes was nearly perfect shooting from the field, going 5-of-6 from the field in the quarter.
Meanwhile, the Warhorses failed to duplicate their early success, hitting on only six of 17 shots to end the game.
For the game, Buxton led Barnwell High with a game-high 18 points. Devin Creech also played well with 17 points. Pete Elmore ad ded 15 points.
Allendale-Fairfax High’s top offensive player was Amonta Holmes with 16 points. Jerome Polite had 13 points and Ron Albany and Ward Youmans each contributed 11 points.
