Blue Devils torch Trojans for first win

  • Blue Devil right-hander Brandon Nix disarmed the Trojans at the plate with an eight strikeout performance.

The Williston-Elko High varsity baseball team scored its first win of the season Friday in an 16-3 road victory over Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High.

Williston-Elko High coach Alan LeRoy said the team played well after a tough start to the season.

“This was a big win for our team today,” LeRoy said. “I thought we hit the ball really well and we were very aggressive on the bases.”

For the Blue Devils, Brandon Nix did just about everything but drive the bus for the team against the Trojans.

The sophomore sensation had a great all-around game. At the plate, Nix finished with three hits, two runs scored and seven RBIs. Nix was also the top pitcher, recording eight strikeouts while allowing four hits.

“I never had a game like this,” Nix said. “I just went out and played my best and good things usually happen when you do that.”

After going winless in their first two games the season, the Blue Devils were in need of a win at Norway to get on track.

Senior Tyshawn Allen did his part with a lead-off triple in the first inning. Allen then scored moments later off a hit by Will Nolind. Two batters later, Nolind made the score 2-0 when he came home off a single by Case Wiles.

Ahead 2-0, the Blue Devils added to their advantage in the second inning.

In all, the team plated five runs off four hits and two errors in the inning. Tres Rimes and Brandon Nix sparked the Blue Devils with two-run RBI singles.

Players scoring in the inning included Tyshawn Allen, Case Wiles and Will Nolind.

In the fourth inning, the offensive fireworks at the plate continued for the Blue Devils as they stretched the lead to 16-2.

For the second time in the game, Brandon Nix delivered the big blow in the inning with a three-run RBI double.

Others who singled and scored in the inning included Will Nolind, Wymon Long, Noah Wooten, JC Woods and James Wood.
