JDA junior varsity softball team wins
The Jefferson Davis Academy junior varsity softball team earned a 10-8 come-from-behind win over Holly Hill Academy Friday, April 28 in Blackville.
JDA coach Bart Owens said the players never lost their poise after falling behind early in the game.
“Things didn’t start off well, but I’m really proud of the girls for hanging in there and fighting back,” Owens said. “We made some mistakes today, but we were able to overcome them with our bats. Overall, I thought we did a great job of putting the ball in play.”
In a battle of the Raiders it was Holly Hill Academy which got on the scoreboard first with four runs in the top of the first inning.
Jefferson Davis Academy quickly fired back in the bottom half of the first inning. The team sent 10 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the inning.
The inning was fueled by RBI singles from Kirsten Kight, Caitlyn Banks and Kate Polston. Players scoring in the inning included Abbie Grace Weeks, Blake Pritchard, Kamryn Gantt and N’Yannia Prince.
Ahead 7-4, the scoring continued for JDA in the third inning. This time, the team plated four runs off three hits and two errors for a 11-4 lead.
For JDA, Mary Beth Fogle had the big hit in the inning with a two-run RBI double. Abbie Weeks and Kate Polston also singled and scored.
Leading 12-4, Holly Hill tried to rally in its last at-bat. The team scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning before JDA ended the game on a ground out.
In the circle, Kirsten Phillips was the winning pitcher for JDA. She finished with four strikeouts.
